Starting point, using only what was known through December 31, 2023: Bitcoin closed the year near $42,000, up roughly 155% from its 2022 crypto-winter low around $16,500, on the back of a recovery narrative rather than a fresh catalyst that's already priced in. The single biggest known-but-unresolved event sitting on the calendar is the SEC's decision window on spot Bitcoin ETF applications: BlackRock filed for its iShares Bitcoin Trust in June 2023, with Fidelity, Ark/21Shares, Invesco, and others running parallel filings, and the SEC's final deadline for the earliest of these falls in the second week of January 2024. Approval is widely expected given the SEC's own procedural signals through December (meetings with issuers on share creation/redemption mechanics), but it is not a sure thing: the SEC has denied every prior spot BTC ETF application on record, and Grayscale only forced its GBTC conversion path via a court win over the SEC in August 2023. That asymmetry — large expected inflows if approved, "sell the news" or continued rejection if not — argues for a full position sized for the base case, not a leveraged bet on the outcome itself. Allocation: $5,500 to Bitcoin, $3,000 to Ethereum, $1,000 to Solana, $500 held as a stablecoin/cash reserve. BTC gets the plurality both as the direct ETF-catalyst asset and as the position least dependent on any single technical narrative going right. ETH's weight reflects a clean 2023: the April 2023 Shanghai/Capella upgrade unlocked staking withdrawals and removed the last major liquidity objection to staking, EIP-1559 has made supply net-deflationary in high-usage stretches since the September 2022 Merge, and a second wave of Ethereum ETF filings (VanEck, ARK, and others) exists as a plausible later-2024 catalyst behind BTC's, just not on the same near-term clock. Solana is the smallest position and the highest-variance one: SOL fell to roughly $8 in December 2022 in the direct aftermath of FTX's collapse, whose principals were among Solana's largest backers, then recovered above $100 by December 2023 — an order-of-magnitude round trip built on both genuine network-usage recovery (DEX volume and NFT activity climbing back) and a market re-rating speculative assets now that the Fed looks closer to done hiking after its July 2023 move to 5.25-5.50%, the cycle's last hike as of this writing. That's real signal, but a move that large off a bottom that low is also exactly the kind of run that gives back fast on one bad headline, hence the capped size and the $500 held back rather than fully deployed. The honest caveat: this allocation leans hard on an ETF approval that has not happened, sized so the portfolio survives if it doesn't rather than betting the outcome is certain. As of December 31, 2023, the SEC itself has committed to nothing, January's ruling is a genuine bimodal event, and every number above describes what already happened, not what happens next.
